David Peek retired in 2013 following a 36 year career in county law enforcement and corrections, all in the State of Georgia. David began his public safety career in 1977 as a deputy sheriff/jailer in Clayton County. In 1979 he joined the Gwinnett County Police Department as a police officer. David worked at GCPD for more than 20 years and was promoted through the ranks at regular intervals until reaching the rank of Captain. David served in most areas of the police department including uniform patrol, criminal investigations, drug enforcement, crime prevention, administration, and fiscal management.
In 1999 David transferred to the Gwinnett County Corrections Department in order to accept the position of Deputy Warden of the Gwinnett County Correctional Complex. The complex is an 800 bed medium security facility that houses state inmates who are wards of the Georgia Department of Corrections, along with county-sentenced inmates and work release residents. As deputy warden, David directed both the Support Services Division and Security Division within the department. In 2007 the County Administrator appointed David to the position of Warden, and he served in this capacity until his retirement. Under David’s leadership, in 2009 the complex became the only government-owned correctional facility in Georgia to earn national accreditation.
David has a BS degree in Criminal Justice Administration, and in 2006 he became the first person in the State of Georgia to earn recognition as a certified correctional executive by the American Correctional Association (ACA). David has performed accreditation audits for the ACA since 2010, and in 2015 he was certified as a PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) auditor by the U.S. Department of Justice. He is an active member of the American Correctional Association; and a past member of the Georgia Prison Wardens’ Association, Georgia Jail Managers’ Association, Gwinnett Police Chiefs’ Association, and the Gwinnett Technical College Criminal Justice Program Advisory Committee. David currently resides in Georgia with his wife Wanda.
